About Mr Ashwin Unnithan

Over ten years of hip and knee surgery. One simple belief: patients do best when they’re treated as people.

Trained across three specialist units, with one focus

My surgical training began in Surrey and Sussex, before I moved onto the South-West London higher surgical rotation. A year-long trauma fellowship in New Zealand sharpened my instincts under pressure, treating complex injuries far from the comfort of a familiar team. Alongside this, a Masters in Musculoskeletal Science at UCL and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital gave me the research grounding that still shapes how I plan every case.

Two further fellowships – at the Bristol Hip Unit and back at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital – built the sub-specialty skills I bring to hip and knee replacement today. I’ve since published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international meetings across Europe and the US, including a first-prize presentation at the British Trauma Society meeting. But the training that matters most to me isn’t the one measured in prizes – it’s the one that shows up in how quickly my patients get back to walking on their own terms.

When he’s not operating, you’re more likely to find Mr Unnithan on his bike or watching from the touchline at his son’s football matches than in a boardroom. He also films short patient-education videos for Instagram – usually talked into it by his family, who keep him firmly grounded outside of work.
